Play Like a Kid

Sometimes at work you get mired down in the business of making things and you lose sight of the silly stuff you're actually making. If you would've told me 10 years ago I'd be working with a candy brand to make content with Funny or Die and Rainn Wilson I would've said you were crazy. Take a peak and share with a friend.

Christmas in June

After creating my last post, I realized that I totally forget to post my family's annual Christmas card, which is odd since I'm so awesome at blogging. I'm also including the original sketch for s&g's. Until next time.

Turtle Time

Man, I suck at keeping up a blog. Do they even call them blogs any more? Who cares. Anyway, I'm here now and that's what matters. Works been crazy for the past little bit working on all things Airheads related, but when I'm not hocking candy I try to squeeze in personal projects.

I thought I'd take a few minutes to share a piece I just finished. A few weeks ago, I was in a meeting paying very close attention and like all good 30 something men, I was drawing Ninja Turtles. I hope everyone does this, but I drew something I really liked and I decided to indulge my whimsy and finish it. I had so much fun making this one that I think I'll make it part of a series. I'm planning on doing all 4 of the guys in different settings of the turtle universe with loads of easter eggs and fun inside stuff for all you turtle lovers.

I've included a lot of detail shots and process shots for all of my pixel pushers out there.

& A Happy New Year.

It's been a minute. 2015 was a crazy year for me and mines. My wife and I paid off all of our debt (excluding our home) which is a project that has dominated our life for the better part of 3 years. It was an exercise in diligence, contentment and obedience. If you ever find yourself under a mountain of student loan debts, hospital bills, car loans and credit cards you should really give this endeavor a shot. It was a hard fought 3 years but the freedom is undeniable. A freedom to make some otherwise crazy decisions, like, I don't know moving to a different state for another job.

So, that's exactly what we did. Over a year ago I saw the creative director of a not so little shop called Huge speak at a conference and I told one of my then co-workers, "If I ever get the chance, I'm gonna work at that place." Fast forward 6 months, I get an email from a recruiter for none other than Huge. Yada Yada, I work there now. I uprooted my family, packed up our old Dodge Dakota, my wife quit her job and we moved to the booming metropolis of Atlanta. It's been exciting, stressful, exhausting and rewarding. It was a hard decision to move away from all of our friends and family, but when it came down to it I decided I'd rather know that I made a mistake than wonder if I missed an opportunity.

Up to this point, the blessings we've received on this adventure have been numerous. I work at an awesome shop with great people, Kelly gets stay home with our son, Hudson, and the amount of times Kelly and I have looked at each other and said "Thank God we did this when we did." are hard to count.

So yeah, 2015 — what a nutty year. It's been a wild ride and I can't wait to see what 2016 throws at us. I'll try to keep this site up a little more. Admittedly, when life gets wacky, this is one of the first of my extracurricular activities to get cut. Now that life has normalized a little bit, I should be around a little more.

Have a merry one. Good tidings and all that.

Star Wars Celebration

In honor of Star Wars Celebration I created 6 illustrations for Verizon FiOS's instagram account. It was a labor of über geeky love. The Verizon FiOS instagram is coming to a close as Verizon is consolidating their brand (a good move), so check it out while you still can!

New Work for Verizon FiOS

Erwin-Penland recently acquired the social account for Verizon FiOS. One of the social platforms our team now manages is Instagram. This particular social platform is tricky. Since most users avoid branded content and choose to follow friends, inspirational or creative accounts there isn't much room for 'buy this!'. With this understanding, we attempted something kind of ballsy. To position FiOS as the ultimate entertainment enthusiast we decided not to use photography at all, instead we opted for fan art. Each week I illustrate 2-3 pieces for the account. These colorful little squares are filled with 100% fandom. We find iconic objects from every genre of film, television and gaming. All of this is done to prove to the FiOS following that we care about entertainment just as much as they do.

To see the whole lot, follow FiOS on Instagram.

Merry Christmas from stately Cobb Manor

My lovely bride, Kelly, tasked me with illustrating this year's Christmas card. Since it is our first Christmas as parents we wanted try to do something special. I probably spent way too much time working on this, but now we've got a great marker in time for our growing family. Hopefully I'll be able to continue illustrating our cards year to year so Hudson will have some fun stuff to enjoy as he grows up.
